I'm curious to know how long it has taken you 1st DAN TSD black belts to reach that level. I've hear some people say it only took a year and others say two or three years. It obviously depends on your instructor's expectations, but I'm wondering what the "average" time might be....
I don't do Tang Soo Do, but in my system, it takes 3-3.5 years to attain blackbelt, then another year to reach 1st dan. After 1st dan, it takes a minimum of 2 years to reach 2nd dan.
So, it CAN be done in 4 years, but most take 4 1/2 years to get to 1st dan.
I happened to take 5 years. I skipped a few tests and felt I wasn't ready. Then it took me 2 years to get 2nd dan. I'm still waiting to test for 3rd dan though. It may take a bit longer than I had hoped.
I've trained in so many different styles that I've had to start over again and again, so it took me almost 20 years to get my first black belt.
At my dojang, the average student does not earn a black belt. Sorry, Chapel, but I've watched plenty of average students train with us for a year or two and then quit at blue or even red belt.

On that same note I doubt I'll ever receive a black belt in TKD. It was a goal of mine as soon as a year ago but now I've realized that skill and belt color are 2 different things. As long as I have the level of skill I desire nothing else matters to me.

I get what you are saying, and it makes perfect sense. The thing I dislike about giving that answer and only that answer is it avoids the question. You know what question he is asking, so why not just answer it.
Anyway... you didn't avoid the question with the "average students don't" answer, so we are still on good terms.

Home Country:
it took me about 7 yrs or so to get 1st dan in TKD, got started over at blue belt when i was stationed in Korea an it took me about six months to get BB again
i jus needed some fine tuning with my forms and techniques
took me a year to get BB in TSD, but thats cause i had several years of experience in TKD an they both are kinda similar, at least the organization i trained with.
im not certain bout an average time.
