HUGHES VS ALVES TO MAIN EVENT UFC 85 IN LONDON Friday, April 25, 2008 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com Former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion Matt Hughes will return to action on June 7 in London to face Thiago Alves in the main event of UFC 85, as confirmed from sources within Alves’ camp, as well as Hughes on his personal website.
Matt Hughes is coming off of a loss to St. Pierre in December. After premature talk about his possible retirement, he will return to headline another UFC card.
Hughes also has no plans to call it quits regardless of the outcome of the fight with Alves. As he stated on his website, “The fight (with Alves) is confirmed, it will be the main event for (UFC 85). Dana just called me with the news. Chuck got hurt and couldn’t fight, so he needed a replacement and called me and I said yes … No matter what happens in this fight, I’ve got Serra next.”
In his last fight out, Thiago Alves took the biggest step forward in his career defeating Karo Parisyan by TKO in the second round, putting himself in the mix as a top contender in the weight class.
This is actually the second time Alves has put himself in place to face Hughes. After former champion Matt Serra had to drop out due to a back injury, Alves stepped up and offered to fight Hughes, but Georges St. Pierre ended up getting the fight instead.
UFC 85 also features a bout between Rashad Evans and James Irvin that MMAWeekly.com confirmed with both fighters earlier this week.
UFC 85 Bouts (officially announced):
-Fabricio Werdum vs. Brandon Vera
-Martin Kampmann vs. Jorge Rivera
-Nate Marquardt vs. Thales Leites
-Thiago Tavares vs. Matt Wiman
-Marcus Davis vs. Mike Swick
-Luis Arthur Cane vs. Jason Lambert
-Neil Wain vs. Antoni Hardonk
UFC 85 Bouts (unannounced):
-Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves
-Rashad Evans vs. James Irvin
-Ryo Chonan vs. Roan Carneiro
-Jess Liaudin vs. Paul Taylor
How did Matt Hughes fall so hard that he has to fight someone like Alves?
He's still and was the most dominant welterweight ever, with only two recent losses coming from GSP. Other than that, no one has been able to beat this guy. Not a big fan of Hughes but he deserve to fight someone better than Alves.

The reason you have this fight is because Thiago's recent win over Karo. Karo was suppose to win that fight and then fight Jon Fitch to decide who would get the title shot. But Karo got caught with a knee (I was soooo pissed ) So now you got Thiago Alves in the mix and who the hell wants to see that. So put him up against Matt Hughes, since Chuck is injured and Rashad can't carry a main event. Then you build up some hype for the Serra vs. Hughes fight. Or worst case scenario if Alves wins then you can book him against Fitch, "after his stunning upset against Matt Hughes and putting out the heat blah blah blah". I hope Matt kills him.

Also, Matt knows he's only got few more fights in him. To him, winning the championship belt is not the main concern for him at this time as he already held it for long enough. I think he just needs to make as much money as possible within next couple of years, regardless of the opponent. And he really wants to fight Serra for personal reasons.
Personally I like the matchup, classic grappler vs striker.
I'm much more excited to watch Vera vs Werdum! Werdum is a SICK jiujitsu guy and Vera is a damn good jitsu guy himself. Vera keeps it standing and he has a good chance to take out Werdum.
MArquardt vs Leites has potential as well.
I like this card, no title fights which usually makes for a better UFC overall.

I agree when you have no title fights on a card you tend to get a better card in general.
PS everyone should root Matt Hughes!!!!

He's a wrestler from Illinois, pretty mellow guy, me and a couple of my guys went down to St. Louis to roll with him when he was getting ready for, at the time the Serra fight. Plus his twin Mark beat me at state in 1991.
