LESNAR PROVES HIS WORTH AT UFC 87 Sunday, August 10, 2008 - by Jeff Cain - MMAWeekly.com Brock Lesnar's second appearance in the Ultimate Fighting Championship garnered the former NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion and former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar his second career mixed martial arts win.
In only his third MMA fight, Lesnar took on UFC and Pride veteran Heath Herring at UFC 87 from the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday.
Herring has taken on the top heavyweights in the world, including top ranked Fedor Emelianenko and UFC heavyweight titleholder Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on three occasions.
Lesnar wasted no time, opening the bout with a flying knee before dropping Herring to the canvas with a right hand and charged in like a linebacker with his sights set on the quarterback.
The stunned Herring rolled but found himself underneath the gigantic Lesnar absorbing punches to the head and knees to the body. Surviving the first round, Herring would see much of the same in the second.
Herring came to life in the third round, moving forward and landing shots on Lesnar who simply reverted back to his wrestling experience and took the beaten and battered Herring down.
Following the fight, Lesnar asked the cheering crowd. "Can you see me now? Can you see me now?"
"I fell off the horse against Frank Mir and tonight I got on that stallion and rode out of town,” stated the 31-year-old heavyweight. “I’ve just been trying to work on everything, every single day to get better, to be a well-rounded heavyweight fighter and a contender in the UFC.”
After his performance on Saturday night, Lesnar may not have shown that he's well-rounded, but he sent a resounding message to the heavyweight division that he is a contender.
I'll admit that I was seriously skeptical when he decided to get into MMA/professional fighting.
I was really afraid that it was only a large marketing ploy to get the WWE/pro-wrestling fans to jump the boat to the UFC side. This still may be happening.
But if Lesnar is taking this seriously and training like he says,...then more power to him.
Brock totally man handled Heath the entire 3 rounds. His physical strength and size is hard to overcome even for 250lbs guy. (Brock was around 280lbs)
Brock really needs some help with techniques to finish the fight, which he lacked in this fight.
I agree with this 100% he had multiple chances to finish the fight with submissions and never worked anything. He is a monster and if he ever gets his submission game together people watch out!

I agree. However, Brock Lesnar is too much of a egotistical meathead to do that. He is all about using his physical size against anyone and trying to pound them into oblivion. "YOU MAKE BROCK MAD! BROCK POUND YOU NOW! Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now???" That was poor form to walk out saying that crap. Egomaniac. This is why I hate Brock Lesnar.
I have to agree with Gambatte Karate on this one. Lesnar seems too full of himself and relies on his size and physical power too much. Since many of the top MMA fighters are well-versed in arts like BJJ and JJJ (styles that specifically teach smaller, weaker fighters how to submit larger, stronger attackers), he's going to run into more situations like what happened with Frank Mir. I don't believe that will be his only defeat due to submission or choke.

Well not JJJ dude. Truth be told there are very few heavy weights that are as good off their back as Mir or Nog. You aren't getting top position on Lesnar and if you do it would be hard as hell to maintain it. It's not just his size that is the issue it's his athleticism. As Heath said he had fought bigger wrestlers such as Fujita and Waterman but, he hadn't fought such a big man with such explosive power and speed. Broc throws a double faster then GSP and he's over 100 pounds heavier, thats insane!! With a better all around submission game, that includes submission defense it will be hard for anyone to beat him. I was talking to TeamHBJJ about this on the way in this morning, if he focuses on arm and leg locks from the top position he will take you down and submit you, end of story. He doesn't have to worry to much about arm locks such as kimora or arm bar because he can power out of that. He needs to defend leg attacks and chokes, with traps as big as his are again I don't think a lot of people can knock him out. Heath caught him flush a couple of times and it had little affect on Broc.

Explosive is a very apt way of describing Lesnar thats for sure.
But umm can we let this whole egomaniac thing go. These guys ALL believe they are the best and they are doing what it takes to prove it. Even if they arent saying it out loud they are all cocky (they want that belt dont they?)
If you walk the walk then you should be allowed to talk the talk. I mean hell did you hate Deion Sanders too, that guy NEVER shut up. But then again if I ran a 4.3 at 37 years old I'd never shut up either.

I do not think you can choke this dude... He has non Neck at all!!
He hopefully will learn some ground game and people better watch out at that point. Brock can be as much of a Ass as he wants. He beat a very quality opponent not just some chump as they are doing with Kimbo. Brock love'em or hate'em he is the real thing!

Hell yeah. Broc would kill that pretender Kimbo!!!!!

Actually, yes I did hate him...but thats another story. I guess we'll all just have to wait until Lesnar gets bored with UFC or he gets too old to compete....Or he gets drunk and goes on a rampage in downtown somewhere. Pun intended.

Lesnar will loose again...Trust me....He'll turn into a rampage or a tyson or whoever you want to pick. He'll do it too. This all feeds his ego. Unfortunatly, I'm WAY too small (by comparison) and old to compete against him. If I knew 20 years ago, what I know today....I would be in the UFC also. Of course...hindsight is 20/20.

Oh I agree he will loose again no doube about it. It won't be against a chump. It will be against a A-class fighter at his top level. Gonzaga, Werdum, Mir (Again), That guy who just beat Jake O'Brien I would like to see him fight him also. There guys all very tought fights!!
