ST. PIERRE VS PENN MEGAFIGHT NEXT ON TAP

ST. PIERRE VS PENN MEGAFIGHT NEXT ON TAP
Monday, August 11, 2008 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

The life of a champion comes with many challenges including a seemingly never-ending list of opponents. It appears Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre already has his next challenger laying in wait for him.

Following an exciting night of fights at UFC 87, company president Dana White confirmed to the media in attendance that current lightweight champion B.J. Penn would move back up to 170 pounds to face St. Pierre, with most speculation landing the bout on the UFC’s big year-end event in late December.

“They both really want that fight, they both want to fight each other,” said White during the UFC 87 post-fight press conference. “I’m going to let that fight happen and then I’ll figure out what we’re going to do at 155.”

White said “definitely” that St. Pierre’s next challenge would come from Penn, but despite rumors circling that the fight could take place in the champion’s hometown of Montreal, White responded, “probably not.”

St. Pierre, who adamantly stated that he would not duck any deserving challenger, seemed more than content to put his welterweight championship on the line with Penn.

“I want to be a real champion, I want to be the best in the world,” St. Pierre stated. “And to be the best in the world you need to fight the best in the world and I want to give a shot to everybody that deserves it. B.J. Penn deserves it, he’s an incredible fighter.”

Penn was said to be seen in the crowd at UFC 87 cheering on St. Pierre during his title defense against Jon Fitch. St. Pierre currently holds a win over Penn in 2006 via split decision.

St. Pierre mentioned during the press conference that many fighters, including Thiago Alves and EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields, as challengers that have also called him out recently, but Penn will get the next crack at the title.

“This is a big fight and they both want it and I think everybody wants to see it,” said UFC president Dana White about the upcoming bout between St. Pierre and Penn.

Well I will be the first to say it here... I am 100% BJ Penn fan!! I think he is the BEST 155 on the planet no-1 can touch him. I am sad to say that he will not be able to stay in the same boat as GSP in this fight. GSP wrestling is too good, stand-up is too good and his athleticism is too good. The size if GSP and his strength BJ can't deal with it. Sorry you all but I think GSP beats BJ Penn!!

I'm confused about a few things...

1. If BJ loses does he keep the 155 Belt?

2. Are they really going to let BJ hold both of those belts if he wins?

3. Is BJ really deserving of a title shot at 170?

I agree I think there is a chance Penn wins but GSP is to strong at 170. Which sucks because I really don't like GSP and I love Penn

1. He should.

2. They should.

3. Hell yeah!!!! Former champ at 170lbs current champ at 155lbs. Lost to current 170 champ via split decision.

God I hope BJ kills GSP.

It would seem now would be his best chance. I've never seen BJ prepare for fights in the past like he has now. I mean he used to always be such a doughboy at 170. I hope he can gain muscle and not "weight".

The rematch between the two is going to be huge!!

The last time they fought, neither were title holders, no they each have title and have defended it at least once. And they both have improved as fighters since last time they fought. So, the question is who has improved more?

I think you hit the nail on the head, man. I like both fighters and think they are both great sportsmen, but, at 170, I think GSP is going to have the edge. That's going to be one helluva fight.
