COUTURE A CONTENDER AT LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT Monday, February 08, 2010 - by Jeff Cain - MMAWeekly.com Randy “The Natural” Couture continues to defy Father Time and rack up wins in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The 46-year-old UFC Hall of Famer defeated fellow UFC Hall of Fame inductee Mark “The Hammer” Coleman by submission at UFC 109 on Feb. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas, and plans to stay in the light heavyweight division where UFC president Dana White thinks he’s a top contender.
“I’m having fun playing around and banging with the 205-pounders right now,” said Couture following his UFC 109 victory.
“I personally think this guy is one of the best light heavyweights in the world. He’s in the mix,” UFC president Dana White told the media at the UFC 109 post-fight press conference. “He’s in the mix with the top five guys who can fight any of those guys at any time. It’s just going to be a matter of timing now.”
Couture’s place in the 205-pound division will be more clear expedited by the outcome of a few upcoming marquee match ups in the weight class.
White commented that Couture’s a contender but the division has to shake itself out before Couture’s position on the ladder to a title shot is fully known.
White said the organization needs to, “Get some fights out of the way…Get some of this light heavyweight business handled with Rashad (Evans) and Rampage (Quinton Jackson) and all these other guys, get the Lyoto Machida and ’Shogun’ Rua fight done. Randy’s right in the mix.”
“He’s one of the best light heavyweights in the world right now. He’s only lost twice at this weight category,” continued the UFC president.
Couture has gotten more title fights than any fighter in UFC history, so if the past tells us anything about the future, we can expect to see Couture in another one sooner than later.
Couture said in interviews leading up to the UFC 109 bout with Coleman that he’d welcome a title fight against the winner of Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua that headlines UFC 113 in Montreal on May 8.
I would LOVE to see Couture face off against Machida. Talk about a clash of styles there.

He also recently beat Brandon Vera. His only losses in light heavyweight is to Chuck Liddell twice. And Randy is a big draw in any UFC event so it's an easy business decision. Remember, he got the immediate title shot against Tim Sylvia when he came out of retirement.

I would say he's top five at 205 in the UFC, Jon Jones has time to work his way into position as well, We'll see if he can get past Vera. If not Randy just beat Vera (closely)no more hendo, How about Randy vs. Forest? I would take Couture with some confidence.

Doesn't Forrest work out of Xtreme Couture gym in LV? Would they fight each other?

Don't know but who else is avalable right now in the top 10? Based on Dana's comments I would guess he'll fight one of the winners of either Rashad/Jackson or Rua/Machida
You know, I never thought about those two matching up. That would be fun to watch.
