Hey a new post that doesn't relate to friggin' Kung-Fu suits!! :P Anyways, did anyone catch the episode last night? I found it kind of weird that 95% of the training footage was of Team Hughes. They had like 1 minut of training with Hightower and it was like "Yup, he's training alright, back to Team Hughes!!" When I saw Blakes stats of 0-0 I said to my g/f, what the hell is this guy even doing on the show?? He was so awful and looked like a little girl throwing punches in there, it was terrible! There's no way that guy would ever survive as a fighter being so brittle and flimsy like he is. "My knee buckled." How convienient for you.
I also found it quite funny that every fight seems to have the Team Hughes fighter throw a Maui Thai knee that "almost" knocks the Team Serra guy out.
I loved Serra picking his "weak link" and having him destroy Hughes' weak link while Hughes was all excited about it and giggling like a school girl (which Blake made fun of later in the show which was awesome haha). As if Hughes would have ever picked Blake for any fight, he would have picked one of his "top" guys to take out the bottom feeders to get the win, 'cause he just HAS to win or he'll cry about it.
Anyone catch UFC Unleashed on before the show? That's the first time I've seen that GSP vs. Sherk fight, it was a gooder! It shows just how far the guys on the show are from top teir Welterweight talent.
i only saw the first round of the GSP fight. i think he is a really good fighter! and i gotta support my fellow countrymen
as far as episode 4 goes, it was pretty lame..... i know Dana is all about ratings and not AT ALL about martial arts, but come on!! half the show was about the stupid camera thing!!! i really cannot stand Dana White.
what is kinda interesting is that i was not sure if i was going to even watch this season because i cannot stand hughs or serra, but i think that serra is doing a really good job. hughs is all about the show and coming off as the big guy and the good guy (and forcing you fighter to pray?? that is the lamest thing ever!! and shows a lack of respect to them) but serra is really training them. yeah, he might not of thought to bring chicken wings for his guys, but i would much rather have his training then a showmen.
GSP is my boy. He can take a crazy amount of punishment and his head will still be in the game and on the next move. Plus his first style was TKD if I'm not mistaken.

I thought Serra showed a lot about his character by not going with Jon's idea of making a "quick 5 G's" by taking the easy road against Blake. It's hard to say what Serra's training is like exactly, since we don't really get to see a lot of it. It must not be all about him and breaking down his fighters like Hughes' training is, so it's not as "interesting".
As for GSP vs. Sherk, GSP landed a vicious elbow in some ground and pound and busted up Sherks face BAD! He went from no blood to a crimson mask in about 5 seconds after the elbow, it was pretty gross. Although, not as gross as Josh Haynes before that, man that was a mess!
I really enjoyed Unleashed last night - great grouping of fights to put together. GSP is awesome! He is what a martial artist should be in many respects.
I still gotta say that Hughes has really taken a page from Tito and is making the most of the show and is putting forth a slightly different Matt Hughes, a Matt Hughes that I could even pull for. He is still pretty self-centered, but the whole show is a contest, and who doesn't want to win? He is still cocky, but he has shown some degree of caring and is really passing on some of what he has learned. I like the way he explained to Dorian that he needs to see the big picture and not just today - great advice, live to fight another day.
Serra curses way too much and is always bad-mouthing Hughes. That just rubs me the wrong way, and I really liked the guy prior to seeing how he really is. Can't deny that he is a great coach, which is probably why they don't show alot of his training, as it is strictly training - or boring - to the average TV viewer.
As for the fight, I don't think Hughes put in the time with Blake from the start and then expected him to pull off a win when they needed it. Just poor preparation on Team Hughes' part. Blake was meant to be a sacrificial lamb from the start, if you get my meaning. Good play by Serra.

i get the tito thing.... i have a ton of respect for him now..... but how do you think that hughes has show character? can you elaborate? because i don't see it at all and like him even less now.
Hughes is all about him winning, more than what's good for his fighters.
Of course...once they get to the top, they want to stay there....what care more about fighters one is training when one has to keep up their own level?
then there is the issue of ego....he may not want to train them so well, as they may wind up in the real ring with them

Hughes said he's got 2 or 3 more fights in him at most, then he's walking away for good. He's going to fight Serra next and maybe another 1 -2 top contenders. I doubt it will be any of the guys from this show.
I don't agree with the Tito analogy either. Ortiz was there to help his guys win, Hughes' guys are there to help him win. Hughes put his entire team through a "punishment" workout because one guy on his team sucked it up and made HIM look bad, what does that say?
I never meant to lead you to think that Hughes was like Tito, he's not, but I think he has definately seen what TUF did for Tito and Tito's reputation/fan base. Hughes knows he's an arrogant a$$ but it seems that he is trying to be a better person this go round. For example, the "heart to heart" talk he had with his team about only having 2 or 3 more fights left and giving the "new" guys a peek into his internal feelings and outlook on things from his point of view. You can't teach that stuff, you can only experience it and pass it on. He had the one-on-one with Dorian about the "big picture". Also, the way he offered a bible lesson to the team - he didn't force anyone to read, but encouraged them. I think the lesson was not about trying to bring anyone to God, but about the story. I think he meant to get his guys in the proper frame of mind, to prepare them for the upcoming weeks of training. I guess what I am trying to say is that Hughes is trying to pass on the "intangibles" of his experience as well as the physical training. He is in no way doing as good a job as Tito did, but compare this TUF with the previous TUF he coached and he is a changed person in that respect. I can respect that from Hughes.
Oh, and I never said Hughes was a great coach. He put his team through hell after the 3rd defeat because that's all he knows - hard work. Some people can teach and others can't. Tito was a great coach, I don't think they've had anyone better.
first off, i think that whole heart to heart thing was not about showing his soul to the guys so much as it was a marketing scheme. he wanted to announce to the world that he was going to retire soon so you guy better watch him while you can. personally i would not be surprised if he stuck around a lot long than he is claiming he will.
second the bible thing i think was totally lame. and the whole essay thing that they guy were suppose to write about which character hughs is was stupid and egotistical. if that were really about teaching the guys life skills outside the ring then why not prepare a selection of readings, some from the bible some from other sources, and there are a lot of better resources out there than the bible to help prepare someone for the world, especially the modern one. i thought the whole thing was a little stange like he was trying to "spread the word of god".
but let's give him the benefit of the doubt, because afterall religion does do some good in the world too and he might have really been positively impacted and wanted to share that with the guys, which is fine.... (i cannot find a way to excuse the essay thing)..... but then give them the material and encourage them to do that in their free time. you do not cancelle training for a bible study! those guys went to great lengths to get on that show and are given an excellent opprotunity. they want to make the most out of it as they can. train the guys that is why they are there!! and then to punish them when they loose???? if his team keeps loosing then it is a reflection of the leadership and training.

do you even watch the show? what do you mean "let him go"... he is the coach for the entire season. it is not like some suvivor thing. and that is what we are discussing, the merit of his training method.
