One, the fighter who couldn't continue wasn't Tommy. It was Matt, who had 2 impressive preliminary wins. Unfortunately, he hurt his rib and decided to bow out. Dana thinks Matt didn't want to face Mac and there might be some truth to that.
So, John stepped in to avenge his previous loss to Mac. He had a different game plan but the result was the same - rear naked choke.
Second surprise was Tommy knocking out George and advancing to the Finals.
Matt Hughes seem very happy that his 2 guys are advancing to the finals and consider his team the winner in Hughes vs. Serra. Now I'm thinking Serra should've let Tommy and Mac fight in the quarter semi, just to eliminate one of them.
The finale is this Friday and it should be a great fight between Mac and Tommy. I'm rooting for the underdog - Tommy.
I thought the finale was Saturday night. I'll have to check on that.
I think Matt probably did the right thing. If he was truly having breathing problems and the cracked rib, then he was in no way near 100%. He would have lost definately and could have possibly gotten injured. Is it worth it? He will probably have a fight on the finale and if he is still impressive, may get more chances to "backdoor" his way into the UFC - others have done it. I think the ke thing was to be on the show and to train hard and have a few good fights, which he did. He probably would have lost to Mac anyway, but I think Mac is our big winner this season.
I think I'm going to have to root for Tommy as well.
