What is the minimum age for a sword anyway.I found one store that will let a 17 year old by a sword, but the renaissance fair you have to be 18.

I have always favored what would be the equivalent of a large bastard sword or a european two handed sword.
I haven't trained with one for a while, but I was devistatingly good with it. Most of my training revolves around the Katana right now which is a close second.

Basically you can buy almost anything if it is for 'show' purposes, like many expect a claymore to be. Truthfully you can get away with a lot if it never leaves your backyard.

Yep. If you don't plan on it leaving your property, all you've got to worry about is getting the sword.

weapons...
Cool topic. After practicing a few different weapons, I can say I most prefer the Bo Staff (4') due to its versatility as a strong offensive and defensive weapon. It can be used unexpectedly and with speed. A weapon I think would be just devestating if someone were to master, however, is the Kusarikama (sickle with a chain at the end). I've built a battle-ready sickle-chain but its darned difficult to use properly.
