I'm no lawyer or anything but...I would assume that in most states you can keep it in your house. If the need arised and you used it for self defense in your home you would have to abide by the regular self defense laws of your state. Some are more leaneant (spelling?) than others.

I would also assume that in just about every state that you are not allowed to carry it as a weapon in public. As for knives, they have a use (ie - opening boxes, cutting string, etc.) But that is why they put an inch limit on them. *(ie - you dont need a katana to open your mail). But Ive never heard of having a permit for such things...especially if your reason for use is self defense. I could be wrong though. I have never really studied this area.

Well, I could get to "Buzard Mode", but I am going to sit nice on the fence and shreek a caw.

I havent found out any state that stipulates a license for a sword. Though I find regulations on the age and the place.

Ok, i did a little research for ya and here the run down,

Due to the everchanging world we live in every state and sometimes every shire or council has its own laws on things. While you may think that it being in your own home is ok, its best to check with your local government , council/shire or police office as in someplaces anything classed as a sword requires a license (or sometimes a police statement claiming you have no criminal backround is sufficient). The permits often cover only ownership and not public liability, so for instance if a visitors bratty 9 year old goes and pokes around in your stuff and laccerates his/her arm you may be legally liable (and seeing as you live in the usa where people sue trees for letting leaves fall on thier cars, its best to check).
If you have any questions its best to ask your local police or equivilent law enforcement agency. Hope this helps.

I agree. Check the local laws...

It really depends on your local laws, but to my knowledge if it is within your own home you should be fine
However you might want to consider if a sword is the best tool available for home defense. I couldn't see the image, but if it's a long sword it may be a problem in close quarters within a house. And theres always the legal ramifications of hacking someone to bits and the issue of excessive force. That said, I'd love to see the look on the person's face that breaks in your house and looks up to see you charging at them with a katana

Also to mention, in court, this "act of defense with a sword", could turn against you...

Excellent question. I think the length of the blade should not matter. You will have to check with local law enforcement to check on what the exact letter of the law is concerning home protection. There are a couple of other options you may want to look into as well. I would highly suggest a moat filled with piranhas. This should keep any roaming bands of ronin and other unsavory persons from gaining access to your home. You may also want to look into electric eels but I have heard they are not as affective. I personally also built a tower for archers to pick off incoming raiding forces, this is pretty much a must when speaking of home security. The real problem I think we'll all agree is the invention movable type, we'll have to keep this from the serfs less they gain literacy and start an uprising!!

I think midgets riding pogo sticks with cow prods singing the oompa loompa song would be the best way to go. Not because of effectiveness, but because I just think it would be interesting to watch
