Yes (well, at least you don't want the whole thing to be 440 rockwell) The inner layer should be extremely hard, don't remember exactly how hard. The outer sides should be soft.
However, having a more pure, stronger, springier steel would produce a more efficient cutting edge, and likely one that would not break as easily.
And, I just realized, that if we are to continue this conversation, we should probably start a new thread on metallurgy.
Sorry about the hijacking of the weapons of legend thread.
Indeed, Exacliber was nade from alien steel

AHEM
BlackDragon: I know you posted this a while back, but I'd like to stick it out there that Zulfiqar is NOT a myth. It exists, and I've seen a photo of it. It is a sword frequently mentioned between Muslims such as myself as it was wielded by the Islamic hero Ali.

The same, or similar, statement can be made by someone regarding all weapons in this thread. A definition of myth is "a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation" This means that even true events, people, and objects can be mythical. The giant squid is mythical, yet it exists. There is proof of it.
All of these weapons have importance to someone, otherwise the legend revolving around each weapon would cease to be.
Ah. I see your point. Heh. I suppose you're right then.
Not that you were wrong. I didn't mean to sound condescending (I do that. I'm a bad diplomat, that's why I'm usually trying pretty hard at it.) I was just making a statement regarding the thread.

It's alright. I tend to word things badly, much more so in real life than on here...So I sometimes have problems communicating my message, and it gets misinterpreted and such. Anyway, has anyone else seen a real-life weapon of legend?

Off topic but just so you guys don't get too hard on yourself:
Internet communication is all text based where as communication in person also relies on voice inflection and body language. As a result it is very easy for context to be lost in a forum like this. I'm sure that everyone who posts here has had a similar situation come up, so it doesn't make you bad at communicating.
We now return to your regularly scheduled topic...
Tonbo-Giri
The name is literally translated as "Dragonfly-cutter" or "Dragonfly-cutting-blade"
It is said that Tonbo-Giri is sharp enough that if a dragonfly were to fly into the edge of the blade, it would cut the dragonfly in half.
The name also has another meaning. Due to its bravery, skill, and straightforward manner of attack, the dragonfly is a symbol of the samurai, giving another implication to the name of the weapon.
This is one of the great treasures of Japan, and was wielded by Honda Tadakatsu, who was Tokugawa Ieyasu's most physically powerful retainer.

Wasnt there a legend of a sword that killed a devil god in the far east? Wasnt it called the Yasutsuna? Don't take my word for it. I'm not sure.
