I am looking for a way to pick up proficiency with a spear, and it seems that none of the schools in the area teach spear work. Any suggestions where I might pick up some useful information. (books etc.)
The principles of Hexagon staff are great for a spear, sorry i dont know about american schools.

Don't know of anyone in that area. Sorry man. The spear is my favorite weapon and think it can teach a lot about the different ranges of combat and timing, with a good instructor who knows its more than stabbing Hope you get a chance to study it.
You're not gonna want to hear this, but I would concentrate on your shotokon unless you are at least a black belt. The footwork is very important with the spear as with all weapons, and it is a lot different from shotokan footwork. It could lead to a lot of confusion both with the spear work and your shotokan.
i appreciate the input. i have seen a lot of really devastating things done with a 9 foot spear in battle situations, and have been amazed by the versatility of a Bo staff with a pointy bit on the end.

The spear can mimic a lot of weapons, so it does take a bit of training to get the intricacies of it. However, the hardest weapon to master is the rope dart/meteor ball. Its considered the highest weapon...and if you've ever worked it, you know why. I think I have more bruises from a blunt rope dart than all other weapons combined and I haven't trained that long with it.
JCaudill what do you mean by western sword and shield, it seems vague, im not being cheeky im just askin here so dont get me wrong, are you talking Anglo-Saxon based forms or LaangSwaarden or what?

there a about 7 thousand different schools of thought on western sword and shield stuff. mostly i study with a school call Tattershawl. the masters we study are primarily Liberi, and Talhoffer. it is hard to get more specific than that being as both masters taught a full range of fighting from unarmed to dagger fighting all the way up to lance combat from horseback
